Yendi Water Crises: Ya-Na Visit River Dakar as Desilting Begins

The Overlord of Dagbon, Ya-Na Abukari II has paid a visit to River Dakar in the Yendi Municipality to assess the state of the ongoing desilting exercise by the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL).

His visit was to also familiarise himself with the workers and to ascertain their challenges to enable him redress them as the King of the Dagbon Kingdom.

On March 29, 2021, the Ya-Na made an appeal to the Ghana Water Company Limited, Municipal Chief Executive and Philanthropists to help him desilt River Dakar.

The GWCL has since provided a desilting machine to commence work whiles delivering five water tankers to ameliorate the situation.

This is following the perennial water crises that hit the Yendi Municipality after River Dakar (Kulkpini), the main source of water for the area dried up.

Speaking on behalf of the Overlord, The P.R.O for the Gbewa Palace, Yakubu Musah assured the GWCL that the Palace is ready to support them in making sure that the residents get water to drink.

The Ya-Na added that in providing solution to the current perennial water crises, all irrigation activities which is 100 meters away from the river will be relocated to make sure that proper work is done.

He further appealed to residents and water tanker owners to avail themselves in support of his initiative to deal with the water crises in Yendi.

The Ya-Na revealed that plans are far advanced to get the Eastern Corridor workers to support the GWCL desilt the River Dakar.

President Akufo-Addo on Wednesday, 29th July, 2020 cut sod for the construction of the Yendi Water Supply Project, in fulfilment of a pledge he made to the Overlord of Dagbon, Ya-Na Abukari II at the 2019 Damba Festival.

The Water Supply Project, being financed by a $30 million facility from the India Exim Bank, is aimed at providing the people of the Yendi Municipality.

On his part, the Municipal Chief Executive for the Yendi Municipal Assembly, Alhaji Ahmed Abubakari Yussif emphasized there are surveyors currently on site working on the government water project.

The MCE appreciated the efforts of Ya- Na and the Ghana Water Company in putting measures to make sure that the river is desilted for residents to get portable water to drink.
