Yendi Local Assembly rejects MCE nominee, Alhaji Ahmed Yussif Abubakar

President Akufo-Addo’s Municipal Chief Executive nominee for Yendi Municipal Assembly in the Northern Region, Alhaji Ahmed Yussuf Abubakar has been rejected by the local Assembly.

At an election held on Friday, 21 Assembly Members representing 51. 21% voted in favour of the President’s nominee whiles 20 representing 48.78% voted against it.

The outcome of the election means the nominee could not get the two-thirds majority of Assembly members required by article 241 (1) of the 1992 constitution of the republic of Ghana but qualifies for a second round in 10 days.

“There shall be a District Chief Executive for every District who shall be appointed by the President with a prior approval of not less than two-thirds majority of members of the Assembly present and voting at the meeting.”

The nominee is among the President’s previous administration whom he wants to retain to continue in his second term as the Municipal Chief Executive for the Yendi Municipal Assembly.

Some party supporters who came to witness the event expressed their disappointments in the Assembly members for not confirming the President’s nominee but also blamed it on internal party politics within the Yendi constituency.
