Joana Opare, Gender advocate and Executive Director of Gender Planning Consult, has tasked government to make the representation of women in the national discourse a priority.
The statement is in line with the celebration of International Women’s Day under the theme ‘#ChooseToChallenge’.
Every 8th March marks International Women’s Day, which is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women.
In an interview on a Special Women’s Day Morning Show with Host Otiko Afisa Djaba, Joana Opare, Gender advocate and Executive Director Gender Planning consults, noted that successive governments have done little or nothing with respect to the representation of women in Ghana’s formal sector.
According to the Gender Activist, women have always been underrepresented despite the propagation of gender equality and equity.
She expressed displeasure in the Akufo-Addo led government in appointing only 8 women out of the 46 ministers nominated by President Akufo.
” Only 8 women were appointed out of 46 ministers, representing a mere 17.3 percent. Gone were the days where it was said that women were not educated, but that was in the past. Modern day women are equally educated and deserve better representation in the economy. Government clearly hasn’t made the representation of women in governance a priority”, she explained.
