The Member of Parliament for Ningo Prampram has said that he believes it is time to bring back the firing squad to curb the illegal mining menace that has polluted almost all the major water bodies in the country.
Illegal mining which is popularly known as ‘galamsey’ in Ghanaian parlance has gained roots in some parts of the country which has denigrated lands and major water bodies that serve as a source of water in households.
There have been discussions about the punishment to be meted out to individuals who are caught in the act. Recently, the task force in charge of apprehending illegal miners resorted to burning the concessions, however, some people have risen against it.
Speaking on a JoyNews panel discussion on Thursday, April 6, 2021, according to a report sighted on Ghanaweb, Sam George expressed fear of his children and “your children will not have portable water to drink” due to illegal mining.
“If the person is NDC, if the person is a national executive of the NDC, arrest him and jail him. I believe that for the first time we should actually have the firing squad brought back,” Sam George said.
The firing squad has not been in use in Ghana since 1993. It was a common way of executing offenders who had been sentenced to life imprisonment.
